Cancer is a terrible disease, but among the worst of all types of cancers is mesothelioma. This kind of cancer that affects the mesothelium, the tissue that lines all organs in the body and that is most often found in people who were exposed to asbestos over many years. It is an aggressive form of cancer and is too often diagnosed during later stages, making it almost impossible to cure.
Most people with mesothelioma are given only a limited time left to live. Treatments can be aggressive and extend a patient’s life a little bit longer, while others are simply used to help make the time remaining as comfortable as possible.
There is officially no cure for mesothelioma. Traditional treatments like surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, can cure very early stage cases, but that rarely happens. Some evidence is emerging, though, that indicates cannabis has the potential to kill cancer cells. Many people are now wondering if this could eventually become a cure for mesothelioma and other aggressive cancers that are difficult to treat.
Real Research Studies Show Cannabinoids Kill Cancer Cells
Smoking a joint may not cure anyone of cancer, but researchers are finding that some of the compounds in the cannabis plant can be used for medical reasons, and one of them may be shrinking tumors and curing cancer. The natural, bioactive compounds found in the cannabis plant are called cannabinoids and include THC, the compound that causes psychoactive effects, but also hundreds more.
Animal studies with cannabinoids found that these compounds could slow the growth of tumors by causing cancer cells to die and by blocking the growth of these cells. Studies looking at specific types of cancer found that cannabinoids could kill liver cancer cells. Another study showed that cannabinoids could be used to selectively kill breast cancer cells, leaving behind healthy cells untouched.
None of these studies have specifically investigated how cannabinoids act on mesothelioma, but the results are promising. If these compounds can selectively kill different types of cancer cells, there is no reason not to believe that they would also kill mesothelioma cells. There needs to be more research, but the potential for treating cancer and even curing it is enormous.
Synthetic Cannabinoids Already Being Used for Mesothelioma Patients
Two synthetic cannabinoids, compounds based on natural cannabinoids but made in a laboratory, have already been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat side effects of cancer in patients being treated. Chemotherapy is a useful treatment for many types of cancer, but it causes terrible effects like nausea, vomiting, and weight loss as the result of a lack of appetite.
The two drugs are called dronabinol and nabilone. They are sometimes prescribed to patients who are suffering from nausea and vomiting from cancer and cancer treatments that cannot be controlled any other way. They may also be prescribed to stimulate the appetite, which promotes healing. Although these substances are useful and represent a step toward using cannabis to help people heal from cancer, they are not the medications that will cure mesothelioma.
Cannabis and cannabinoids have a great potential to heal, treat, and even cure people struggling with the worst types of cancer, including mesothelioma. Most people who suffer from this aggressive cancer are in this position because of working conditions. They rely on mesothelioma lawsuits and settlements to mitigate the devastation that this disease causes, but it isn’t enough. They are looking for and deserve a cure.
