Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Program
The state of Iowa has approved the Iowa Medical Cannabidiol Program for severe epilepsy since July 1st, 2014. However, on May 12th of 2017, the Governor signed House File 524, further developing the program for other medical conditions, including:
• Cancer (with severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting, cachexia or severe wasting)
• Multiple Sclerosis with severe and persistent muscle spasms
• Seizures
• AIDS or HIV
• Crohn’s disease
• Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
• Any terminal illness with a probable life expectancy of under one year (if the illness or its treatment produces one or more of the following: severe or chronic pain, nausea or severe vomiting; cachexia or severe wasting)
• Parkinson’s disease
• Untreatable pain
Additionally, the state has developed a medical marijuana advisory board that will outline how the new provisions will be implemented and how more conditions may be included per their recommendation. This board, which is made up of various medical professionals and a police captain, is responsible for developing recommendations regarding types, strengths, and quantities of products for patients. The health department intends to license two producers by January and up to seven dispensaries by April of 2018, with sales beginning January of 2019.
Iowa Medical Marijuana
In mid-April of 2017, the Iowa Senate passed Senate File 506, a considerably more comprehensive bill. It had no THC limit and would have allowed approximately 20 different medical conditions. This bill would have also reclassified marijuana under the state law, promoting access to the necessary medicine. Unfortunately, the House disagreed with the extent to which it would legalize marijuana and subsequently stopping it in its tracks. Iowans have hope that the state legislature will ultimately accept a broader definition of medical marijuana, with polls showing an overwhelming majority in favor. Approval and distribution of a total of 181 patient cards has happened since January 30th, 2015. Both the state and its citizens hope the new provisions will allow more patients access to the medicine they need.
